Become a Mentee

Objectives and Expectations

  • Ask lots of questions and engage with your mentor and staff.
  • Check your email and Teams on a daily basis for communication from the program or your mentor.
  • Respond to contacts from the program staff or your mentors within 48 hours. Communication is the key to success!
  • Be on time for all meetings and events. If a scheduling conflict occurs, you must contact your mentor and/or program in advance to reschedule
  • Have fun and make new friends!

Sign Up Process

You can sign up for the METAS program throughout summer orientation sessions up until Sept. 6, 2024. Past this date, if you wish to join the program and get a mentor, please reach out to Elbia Del Llano at edelllano1@niu.edu.

Mentee Application

Qualifications

  • Must be a Latina/o/x freshman or transfer and full-time student
  • Must be available to meet Tuesdays from 4-5 p.m. for the academic year.
  • Awareness and appreciation of all forms of diversity
  • Commit three to five hours per week to your mentor and program
  • Must commit to participate in the program for two consecutive semesters (fall and spring)

Responsibilities

  • Attend meetings held Tuesdays from 5-6 p.m. for the academic year (fall and spring)
  • Maintain weekly contact with your mentor three to five hours per week
  • Maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA
  • Comply with any other duties as assigned
