What scholarships did you receive and why did you receive them? How has the financial support impacted your experience at NIU?
I have received the NIU Transfer Scholarship, the Don and Ann Charleston Scholarship, the Burkart Excellence Nursing Scholarship, the Jane Richards Scholarship and the Illinois Nursing Scholarship Program. Financial support has greatly taken some of the burden off of me, my parents and my grandparents, who all fund my education.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
I wanted to be a veterinarian when I was younger. I gradually decided I wanted to be a nurse practitioner instead, after seeing my nurse practitioner every time I went to the doctor.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
My major is nursing. I decided I wanted to be a nurse and eventual nurse practitioner because I love the medical field, and when I was younger, I loved seeing my nurse practitioner at the doctor’s office. I also wanted to have a job that involved working with kids, so I wanted to mix all my passions and be a pediatric or neonatal nurse practitioner.

What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
The people are very welcoming and nice! I loved living with my roommate at New Hall this past semester.

How have you connected with other students virtually to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
Yes! After transferring and living on campus, I made friendships with those in my nursing track and my roommate.

Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
I am part of the NIU Student Nurses Organization (SNO), which I love! I love getting to hear about all the different nursing specialties. It helps me prepare for the future when I get to choose a specialty.

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach?
I loved Professor Theresa Annis for my health assessment and health assessment application classes. She was super friendly, helpful and accommodating. I loved her personality and class.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?
I like the Huskie Den because I love to play pool!

What advice would you give to a student who is applying to colleges?
I would say to choose a place that feels like home, isn’t going to put you in serious debt when you graduate and has a good program for your major.

Coming to college, what is something that you have had to learn to do differently?
My study habits didn’t really change from high school to college. However, I did have to learn how to be outgoing and talk to people I didn’t know.

What do you do to relax or recharge?
I like to watch Netflix, work out and sleep.

Is there anything else you'd like to share about your NIU Huskie story?
I’m really glad I transferred to NIU!
