What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
When I was growing up, I wanted to be an operations scientist. Currently, I am pursuing this dream as my major.

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
My major is industrial and systems engineering. I chose this course of study because I am fascinated by the intersection of engineering, business and efficiency. Industrial and systems engineering provides a comprehensive approach to solving complex problems within various industries, allowing me to optimize processes, improve systems and make meaningful impacts. I am drawn to the diverse range of skills this field offers, from mathematical modeling to organizational behavior, and I believe that this background will equip me to address the challenges and enhance the efficiency of modern systems and industries.

I am currently engaged in research on order acceptance and capacity planning. This area of study captivates me because it directly aligns with my major in industrial and systems engineering. Investigating how organizations manage and optimize their order acceptance processes while efficiently planning and utilizing their capacities is not only intellectually stimulating but also has practical implications for improving operational efficiency in various industries. I am particularly interested in exploring innovative solutions that can enhance decision-making processes in dynamic and complex environments.

How has conducting research strengthened your education and experience at NIU?
Engaging in research at NIU has significantly enriched my education and experience. It has provided me with a hands-on opportunity to apply theoretical concepts learned in the classroom to real-world scenarios. Through the research process, I have honed my analytical and problem-solving skills, gained a deeper understanding of the intricacies of industrial and systems engineering, and developed a keen appreciation for the importance of research in advancing the field. This experience has complemented my academic coursework and enhanced my overall learning journey.

How will your research experience help you in the future?
The research experience I am gaining at NIU will be invaluable in shaping my future career. It equips me with practical skills that are directly transferable to the professional landscape, especially in roles related to operations, supply chain management and process optimization. Additionally, the exposure to research methodologies and critical thinking will enable me to approach challenges with a systematic and informed mindset, contributing to my effectiveness as a future industrial and systems engineer.

Throughout my research tenure at NIU, Dr. Purushothaman Damodaran has played a pivotal role in shaping my success. Dr. Damodaran's unwavering guidance, profound expertise and dedicated mentorship have proven indispensable, offering the essential support and direction needed to adeptly navigate the intricacies of the research process. His consistent encouragement and insightful feedback have not only been instrumental in honing my research skills but have also been pivotal in cultivating a constructive and positive research environment.

What advice would you give to an incoming student as it relates to research at NIU?
For incoming students interested in research at NIU, my advice would be to actively seek out opportunities early on. Engage with professors, attend research seminars and explore potential areas of interest. Don't be afraid to reach out to mentors who can guide you in finding research projects aligned with your academic and career goals. Embrace the learning process, be curious and view research as a dynamic avenue to deepen your understanding of your field and contribute meaningfully to its advancement.

What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
One pleasantly surprising aspect of my NIU experience has been the sense of community and inclusivity on campus. Despite the size of the university, I've found a welcoming atmosphere that fosters collaboration and support among students and faculty. The accessibility of resources and the willingness of the NIU community to help each other have made my academic journey more enriching than I initially expected.

How have you connected with other students to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
I proudly serve as the president of the NIU INFORMS student chapter, spearheading initiatives like organizing guest lectures and coordinating industrial visits. Furthermore, I held the position of president in the Indian Student Association (2021-2022). These leadership roles, coupled with my active engagement in Dewali and freshers party, have profoundly enriched my Huskie experience. They have not only provided ample opportunities for personal growth and skill development but have also played a crucial role in fostering valuable networking connections within my field of interest.

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?
I enjoy the Engineering Building and the East Lagoon.

What advice would you give to a student who is researching colleges to apply to?
When researching colleges, my advice would be to consider factors beyond just academic programs. Look into the campus culture, available resources and extracurricular opportunities. Connect with current students to gain insights, explore potential majors and ensure the college aligns with your personal and career goals.

Effectively managing my time involves creating a schedule that prioritizes tasks, setting realistic goals and maintaining open communication with friends and family about my commitments. I also make use of productivity tools and strive to strike a balance between academic and personal responsibilities.

I stay informed about campus events and services through various channels such as official newsletters, bulletin boards and online platforms. Following social media accounts, attending orientation sessions and actively participating in student organizations also keep me updated on the latest happenings on campus.

What do you do to relax or recharge?
To relax and recharge, I engage in activities that bring me joy and tranquility. Whether it's reading, going for a walk or practicing a hobby, taking time for self-care is crucial. Spending quality moments with friends and family also plays a significant role in rejuvenating my energy.

In my free time, one of my favorite hobbies is watching and playing cricket. Whether it's enjoying a match on television or participating in friendly games with friends, cricket is not just a hobby but a source of joy and relaxation in my life. It allows me to unwind, stay active and share memorable moments with fellow cricket enthusiasts.
