What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you pursuing that as a major, or have you taken another path?
As I was growing up, I wanted to become a soccer player by playing the right defensive line for a professional team; however, that changed when I took my first anatomy and physiology class at Harry S. Truman College. My affinity for the class grew as I learned about the structures and functions of human systems. 

What is your major (and/or minor) and why did you decide on this course of study?
While the health care field is broad and fascinating, my ambition is to become a neurosurgery nurse. I believe nursing is the right pathway for me to acquire the skills, values, insights and knowledge that will help me progress in my career and contribute to the health care field. My goal is to gain elemental, ethical, interprofessional, cognitive and technical skills and be culturally competent as a nurse. I also aim to develop the core values of nursing that will serve me throughout my professional career. With such skills and values, I will be able to pursue a career I am passionate about. I hope to earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing at NIU, as the school's goals and mission align with my short- and long-term goals. 

What has been something you have found pleasantly surprising about your experience at NIU?
How the professors care about the students regardless of where they are, as well as welcoming office visits after class hours.

How have you connected with other students virtually to study for classes, meet new people or form new friendships?
Most of my classes are online due to COVID-19. I've stayed connected through study groups, clinical sites, Group Me chat, simulation lab activities, online class sessions and professional organizations.

Are you involved in any student organizations, mentoring programs or extra-curricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as a Huskie?
I currently volunteer to administer the COVID-19 Moderna vaccine to level 1B recipients in DeKalb and Kane County, Illinois. Also, I am looking forward to joining the Student Nurses' Organization, and I am a part of DREAM Action NIU. I am looking forward to joining the NIU soccer team. 

Who has been one of your favorite instructors/professors and why? What course did they teach?
My favorite professor is Theresa D. Annis, M.S., APRN. She teaches health assessment in the School of Nursing. She is a phenomenal teacher. She takes the time to listen to what I have to say, is respectful and gives helpful feedback. She is passionate about her students' success, and her enthusiasm and real-world examples made a very technical subject relevant and entertaining. She inspires me every day. 

Where is your favorite spot on campus or in the community? Why are you drawn to it?
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, my favorite spot is the NIU Recreation Center because I am able to exercise, relax and release unwanted thoughts. Also, the library because it creates a good atmosphere for studying.

What advice would you give to a student who is applying to colleges?
Success in life is obtained by preparing for the future. Be proud of who you are; no one can play your part like you. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. In case you are feeling pressured or unsure about the capability of the school, know that NIU will always find the best fit for you and help prepare you to have a successful career.

Coming to college, what is something that you have had to learn to do differently?
Time management is essential, as is developing different study strategies and doing some research.

What do you do to relax or recharge?
I listen to music, update myself on soccer scores (I'm a fan of the Arsenal and Barcelona teams), stay hydrated and watch anime.
